Earlier this month, realestate.com.au released its inaugural Housing Affordability Sentiment Index (HASI)(1) report. The report found that many people are re-evaluating their lifestyles to achieve the great Australian dream of owning a property.
Whilst property seekers are feeling less optimistic about housing affordability, it’s Gen Y that is the most optimistic. A huge 94% said they were willing to give up luxuries in order to achieve their dream. Interestingly, 50% of Generation X, 52% of Baby Boomers and 56% of Seniors see the property market as less affordable.
As a result, people are being more frugal. Many aspiring homeowners are realistic about sacrificing shopping, holidays and cars to ensure they stay on track to get into the market. However private school education and healthcare are now classified as necessities.
To get into the property market, 82% said they could do without a pool, extra space or more bathrooms. However more than half weren’t prepared to live further than 10km from their dream location. Adding strength to the age old adage ….Location, Location!
