Our Backyard – Torquay

Greetings from Great Ocean Real Estate, Torquay

This week we thought we would look at the history of Mount Duneed as  Great Ocean Road Real Estate, Torquay has just listed 95 McCanns Road, Mount Duneed…….80 acres of prime grazing country boasting a magnificent period home (1860) and gardens. The following is a little information about the area; courtesy of the ‘Mount Duneed History Group’

The recorded history of Mount Duneed, originally called Mount Direction, began when Alexander Thomson established a large run stretching from Geelong to Barwon Heads and across to Torquay; and John Armstrong took up 320 acres at Mount Duneed.

In 1854 the government surveyed land in the area…..and on the 16th March 1855 (at ‘Messrs Hutton and Co’s’ auction rooms in Yarra Street, Geelong) twenty four lots varying from 35 to 42 acres went up for sale at £1.10s to £2 per acre. This land immediately surrounded Mount Duneed and was considered suitable for agricultural purposes; slightly stony in parts, very lightly timbered with fresh water obtainable from Duneed Creek.

On the 20th June of the same year, the ‘Geelong Advertiser’ featured 40 acre farms for lease in Mount Duneed. These were to be let to ‘industrious men with families, on easy terms.’

Mount Duneed had a Post Office!

A post office and phone booth were once situated near the crest of the hill on Torquay Road. The Landale family managed this business until 1871 when Charles Lamond obtained a slaughter licence and added a butchers shop. His daughter Bella worked as a Registrar of Births and Deaths for over 50 years from the post office. Eventually the butcher’s shop closed and after many owners Mr Lampard took over and opened a saddler store. His wife, Florence carried on the post office and general store until she retired. The post office was then controlled by two brothers, firstly E & A Jackson and then A & J Jackson. In 1956 the Howard family took over the business until it became obsolete courtesy of the Geelong Telephone Exchange and roadside mail delivery……..and so the area has grown from there !

Kind regard
