Our Backyard – Torquay

International Arrivals

We quite often read articles about the level of population growth Torquay and surrounds is set to experience over the coming decades as we grow as a township by around 20% every 5-6 years. I think we sometimes forget as permanent residency becomes the norm that Torquay until recently was predominantly a seaside tourist town with majority of homes, especially in Jan Juc being utilised as beach homes. We will begin to see a large influx of tourists soon as  Avalon Airport switches from a domestic to international airport. Air Asia X will launch a twice daily service to Kuala Lumpur later this year which then opens up connections to 130 destinations through out Asia. The arrival of the low cost carrier is expected to bring a 500,000 international visitors per year to Geelong and the Great Ocean Road. It will be interesting to see the impact of the increased visitation on our business’, services and local amenity such as our beautiful beaches and parks in Torquay, Jan Juc and Bells Beach. I’m sure with the correct management and investment in infrastructure more visitors can only benefit our fantastic region.
